Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to perform a controlled analysis to estimate the relative risk for surgical morbidity and/or mortality conferred by emergency surgery compared with elective surgery for patients with colon cancer.
Methods: During the period from January 1997 to August 2005 at the Pohang St. Mary¡¯s Hospital, a total of 162 primary surgeries for colon cancer were performed. 26 patients matched with age and stage in each group (ie. emergency surgery and elective surgery) were included in study.
Results: Age, medical comorbidities, and the stage of disease were well matched between groups. Overall surgical morbidity (53.8% vs 23.1%) and mortality (34.6% vs 11.5%) were significantly higher for patients undergoing emergency surgery. Among patients surviving surgery, there was no difference in overall survival between patients undergoing emergency compared with elective operation.
Conclusion: The negative effect of emergency surgery appears to be confined to the perioperative period, because survival is similar for patients who survive this period of time and patients operated on electively.
